The length of time to complete the graduation requirements is different for each individual. The average time-frame to graduate the SofH program is 6-8 months. (For some young men it is sooner and for some it takes much longer)
What happens if a general loses a battle?
Please see our General’s Policy on lost battles.
How does group work? What do the boys learn in a group?
You can listen to a short audio clip of Maurice Harker explaining how a typical group works, or watch THIS VIDEO where he explains it, or read more information.
How many boys are in a group?
On average there are 4 -12 young men in a group.
When is my group meeting time and how do I get there?
When you register, you will choose the group location and time that best fits your schedule. (inluding online options.) Then, during the Orientation Session with your chosen clincian/intern, you will receive the full address of your group meeting location. If you are in an online group, the clinician/intern will email the Zoom online meeting ID and link for you to join in your group meeting each week.
What if my son needs to miss his group meeting?
Sons of Helaman is a self-mastery training program which makes it vital for the young men to attend their 4 weekly group meetings each month. If you are not able to attend your home group for any reason, you have 2 options:
- Attend 2 group meetings the week before you need to miss or on the following week. (Online or In-person). **Please email the main office to request the spreadsheet listing all SofH groups with the info to attend any group in person or the Zoom links to attend any group online.
- If you are not able to attend a make-up meeting, please request a recording by emailing the main office. A training lesson recording will be sent for you to listen to at your convenience.
TIP: Clinicians/Interns encourage the young men to look at their month ahead of time and plan out how they can attend their 4 group meetings in the month. Young men are busy and have many activities and responsibilities. Planning in advance to attend 4 group meetings increases commitment and dedication to their treatment program.
NOTE: Young Men in the Sons of Helaman program can attend as many groups in a week as they would like at no additional cost. If you feel you need extra help or support, please request information on an additional group you would like to attend. We will email you the group information. generaloffice@lifechangingservices.org
What is a Personal Warrior Trainer (PWT)? Is it required?
One of the key parts of the Sons of Helaman training program is the support and training you receive from your Personal Warrior Trainer (PWT). A PWT helps you set your goals in your ManPower journal and answers any questions you may have as you are learning and training in your first weeks. Your PWT is a coach or mentor to help, encourage, train and support you in a 1-on-1 setting.
In addition to the group therapy portion, each enrollee of the Sons of Helaman program is assigned a Personal Warrior Trainer (PWT) who will set a meeting frequency with the enrollee. It is likely that the trainer will recommend that the meeting frequency be weekly until the enrollee reaches 28 consecutive days of ManPower. This portion of training is $30/half-hour session. It is billed at the time of each session. You will be charged for no-shows or any time you cancel an appointment within the 24-hour appointment window.
For more information click here.
How old do the boys need to be to attend a Sons of Helaman group?
We recommend Sons of Helaman enrollment between the ages of 13 – 25, for single young men. Those that are married would want to enroll in Men of Moroni.
Do you have programs for younger children?

Check out our Parents tab for helpful suggestions and resources. One of the best ways to support your son is to understand the principles he is being taught and fight alongside him. Generals are encouraged to attend group for free each week and help mentor other boys in their group. They are invited to attend a Generals’ Panel and share their story to help and encourage others. See Maurice’s letter to parents about Generals and what happens if they lose a battle.

What is the return rate? Do you see boys who need to come back?
The return rate fluctuates each year. This is an ongoing battle to fight for life. When young men find they need to return to Sons of Helaman for support or strength, we welcome them with open arms and encouragement. Re-starting in the program means a warrior has gained renewed effort and courage to battle and win again! Some clients may decide one-on-one counseling is most helpful for their ongoing support. Others train to be a PWT to stay in a good place. Others may look for other great programs outside of Life Changing Services offered for ongoing support. Each person is different and the tools and services to best help and support them will depend per person.
